    Living Green!

Is your family going green? My family is working really hard on being green. I must admit I was the furthest thing from green until I met my husband Chris. Chris I think was born green. I am enjoying becoming green and trying to raise green children. I really love green company's and all the innovative products and ideas they come up with. For example twitter moms recently introduced me to LighterSaferGreener.com they make sunglasses out of our recycled materials.

I wanted to share with you a few ways we our green in the Reynold's family:

    • We do not use paper towels (replaced with skoy), paper plates or cups.
    • We always use reusable bags when shopping many stores give great discounts now.
    • We of course recycle all of our garbage we possibly can!
    • We have switched to green cleaning products it is better for our family and the environment!
    • We buy our clothes from resale shops (saves on budget too)!
    • Chris is becoming a Wind Turbine Technician a green job for a green soul!

How is your family becoming more green? Any tips or have you seen any really cool green products lately? Please share with everyone! I love reading the comments! Make sure to check out LighterSaferGreener.com

We outed paper towels a few months ago and replaced them with white rags that we purchased from target, now we use them to wipe up stains and throw them in the washer when they need cleaning!

We cut out paper plates, cups, etc. And we also use a lot of the green cleaning products. Actually, I think they work better!

I am following you from MBC!

I love the paper towel tip. We use waaaaay too many in our house. I'd rather wash than pollute any 'ole day. But thank goodness we are passed the diaper stage. I don't think I could do green on those!

I have been working at living green for years now. Some of my more recent ideas in the past few years have been to avoid using plastic bags to throw things out. For example, I use an empty dry cat food bag to collect dirty kitty litter and toss the bag once it is full. (Yes, it takes a long time to fill, but since it's made to keep food fresh, it has a nice seal that won't let out the bad odors.) This potentially saves around 20 plastic bags from ending up in the landfill if you compare this method to cat owners who use one plastic bag per litter cleaning.

We no longer use diapers (bravo to my youngest!), but I would dispose of them in an empty cereal bag (since the bag was destined for the garbage anyway). This too would seal in the stinky diaper smell and replace the potential use of a plastic bag and keep us from having to put our trash out pre-filled (thereby saving/being able to use more of the plastic trash bag).

Here's a small tip...Collect paper for recycling in empty paper/cardboard boxes such as cereal boxes, etc. I have room under my kitchen sink for this. On recycling day, I simply put the box out on the curb for pick-up. I then don't have a recycle bin to collect and put away since the cereal box replaces my bin. If more people could do this, the recycling truck wouldn't have to idle as long since it's faster for the recyclers to not have a bin to return to the curb. Less idling = less pollution and use of gas/oil.

    Just some ideas. :)

    Thanks for this post.

I don't have any green tips. I just wanted to say that I'm just starting the process of going green. My Christmas list has a lot of eco-friendly items on it. Like stainless steel water bottles and reusable totes. Hopefully I'll be where you are by next year. :)
